An apparent instability of forms, materials and actions characterises a large part of today’s art. The slick veneers of the past ten years have been replaced by traces of wear and tear and by spontaneous arrangements. Found, recycled or reappropriated materials are the basis of this new experimental testbed.

Given this situation and today’s issues in performance in the visual arts, the exhibition is presenting videos, paintings, sculptures and drawings which share a performative dimension. While mostly static, these objects nonetheless embody a group of gestures which seem to take on a life of their own beyond the exhibition. At a far remove from the spectacular, these gestures are visible in subtle displacements and muted compositions. Performances become drawings or paintings and dance becomes sculpture. In response, painting becomes performance and sculpture is subject to endless rearrangement.

In the course of a journey in which randomness and mastery balance each other out, materials are marked by time, fleeting gestures and hard work. Infused with history and at the same time looking to the future, the works display the process used in their construction, while seemingly remaining unfinished. If the practices on show in “Au fil de l’œuvre” [Workflow] renew a link with processual and “anti-form” art, they playfully keep this history at bay through play, artifice or the absurd. Supposed continuity is constantly fragmented.

This exhibition represents a parenthesis in which the artists’ experiments seem momentarily on hold. In La Galerie’s space, where no partitions have been added, the works occupy floor and walls, as if on a dormant building site. Their coming together takes the form of a landscape of objects waiting to be activated.
